clean break (up to 650 bar / 10,000 psi)

Clean break couplings (drybreak couplings) are low-leakage, drip-free quick coupling systems designed for the safe connection and disconnection of pipes or hoses carrying liquids and gases. They are used throughout industry wherever such connections need to be coupled and uncoupled safely, cleanly and without loss – for example, in the chemical industry, in high-pressure applications or in loading processes.

What are clean-break couplings?
Clean-break couplings (dry couplings or dry-break couplings) are leak-free quick-connect coupling systems for the safe connection and disconnection of pipes carrying liquids and gases. They reliably prevent the escape of media during coupling and uncoupling, whilst minimising the ingress of air into the system.

Depending on the model, WALTHER-PRÄZISION’s clean-break coupling systems are designed for pressure ranges from low-pressure to high-pressure applications up to 650 bar / 10.000 psi and are suitable for demanding industrial applications, including those involving temperatures in excess of 200 °C. This technology is therefore used primarily in safety-critical applications, for example in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

Typical features:

  • low-leakage or drip-free disconnection
  • no air ingress during coupling
  • high process reliability
  • suitable for liquids and gases

Which Clean-Break coupling is the right one?

The choice depends on the application, pressure and flow rate:

High pressure and high temperatures → DD series Clean-Break coupling

High flow rates and loading → CN series for high-volume loading tasks

High-pressure hydraulics → HC series (up to 650 bar)

Limited installation space and automation→ Clean break subassembly elements

Standard applications → other series such as the CT series, depending on the application

Depending on the application, clean-break couplings are also referred to as dry couplings or drybreak couplings. They connect with virtually no air entrapment or fluid ingress; when disconnected, only a minimal, physically unavoidable leakage occurs in the form of a film on the components.

They consist of a coupling and a nipple / adaptor and seal the ends of the lines drip-free using low-leakage valve technology. This is essential, particularly in safety-critical sectors such as medical technology and the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Furthermore, clean-break couplings enable quick, safe, splash-free and leak-free connection and disconnection – in some cases even under residual pressure. Depending on the application, they convey media such as compressed air, acids, gases, hydraulic oils or cooling water. The designs vary in terms of connection mechanism, material and pressure range (low, medium, high pressure) and are available as flat-face, ball-face or sterilisable (SIP) variants, depending on hygiene and safety requirements.

What criteria should be considered when selecting the right clean break coupling?

Selecting the right clean break coupling depends on several factors:

Pressure range
– Low pressure up to approx. 64 bar / 925 psi
– Medium pressure up to approx. 250 bar / 3,600 psi
– High pressure up to 650 bar / 9,400 psi

Temperature
– Standard applications
– High temperature up to over 200 °C

Fluids
– Corrosive liquids
– Gases
– Hydraulic oils
– Coolants
